All Souls

As the Autumn skies darken,
And the evenings lengthen
Our minds and bodies find rest
And our spirits meet the remembered facesĀ
Of spirits gone before.

We bless the names we know
But every anonymous ancestor
Is no stranger
For each hand grasps a friendly hand
Connecting from life through life
to the beginning of all created things

And us, too!
Lengthening the chain by living link
But soon to join the middle stretch
Where in an eternal Autumn
Of peaceful rest
Darkness is made light
By the company of all souls.
