Kindly Inquisitors

Kindly Inquisitors by Jonathan Rauch

Jonathan Rauch wrote this book in 1993 as a warning against the suppression on college campuses of free speech, criticism, and inquiry, perpetrated by the left in service of egalitarian and humanitarian values such as “fairness” and “avoidance of harm” but which stifle the evolution of knowledge. The danger has only gotten more grave and now applies in settings far from college campuses. In 2013 he re-issued his book with a new afterward and a dedication to Frank Kameny, as an example of how moral and political progress requires the open expression of ideas and unregulated argument.
