2)  Message

What is helping you get through this?
People
Friends
My husband
Entertainment
Good television
Good books
Work – Purpose
Attitudes like hope and wonder
But the biggest, general answer is faith

I don’t mean faith as something different from those other things
But faith as the underlying condition of my life
That all those other things stem from
My relationships
My enjoyments
My life purpose
My attitudes

Not faith in a mystical way
But faith as a way of being in the world
A world view
That recognizes that I am part of something larger than myself
And that something larger contains me and supports me
And that my life
And my life’s meaning
Derives from that larger existence
And whatever sense of meaning I think belongs to that larger thing

Where we go astray with the word “faith”
Is assuming that the larger thing must be conceptualized as “God”
Faith in God
Or faith in Lord Jesus
as evangelical Christians say
But anything larger than yourself that contains and supports you can serve
as your object of faith

We are beginning this month, in Islam, the holy month of Ramadan
That’s one way to think about our relationship to something larger than ourself
We just celebrated Earth Day
That’s another way to think about our relationship to something larger than ourself
Or you might just think about this congregation
That’s another thing larger than yourself that contains and supports you.

It is those relationship that form my faith
And it is that faith that is getting me through this.

I offer the same to you.

I’ll see you tomorrow 1pm
