First Day of Passover

Maundy Thursday
Mandatum
Mandate or Commandment – “Do this in memory of me”
Celebrated with a potluck community dinner and then foot washing

Last supper was probably a Passover meal
So you can imagine Jesus reading the Haggadah
And cursing the plagues
And drinking the four glasses of wine
And hiding the Afikomen

I checked in with friends last night
Difficult not to be in person

But spiritual communities no how to connect without being in person
Connecting across time
Great persons in our history
The church enduring through decades and centuries
Connecting through stories
The Passover story is about connecting with the history of the Jewish People through telling the story and passing it down generation to generation
Or the story of Theodore Parker keeping a loaded pistol in the desk drawer in his church office to ward off slave catchers
Or Starr King saying that Universalists believe that God is too good too damn humans, while Unitarians think humans are too good for God to damn.
Connecting through scripture
Like I’m really relying on readings and hymns in our hymnal
Connecting through ritual
The communion ritual is specifically about connecting with the person of Jesus ritually
Connecting through memory
A UU memorial service brings the spirit of the person into the room
“Remembering” the person through our shared memories

So we have always had these skills
It is hard to be apart
But we can lean more heavily now into the other ways that we know that can keep us connected at this time.
