2) Message
Everything is Faith Formation
Stories of being in the hospital
How theology that had sustained people when they didn’t particularly need it
God’s power
Power of prayer
miracles
Failed people when they did need it.
Bad theology
Suffering is “God’s punishment”
No, it’s a virus
Suffering is something some people “deserve”
No, good people suffer the same as bad people
“God will protect us”
Like the churches that refuse to close.
Well “God helps those who help themselves”
We are partners with God, at least
Or perhaps we are all on our own
Or in any case God offers no supernatural help
We got sick because “we didn’t love ourselves enough”
Which blames the victim
Or, “He died because he didn’t fight hard enough.”
Which blames the victim
Or “God needed an angel”
No – God does not need to kill innocent people
Good Theology
Suffering is a natural part of life
It doesn’t need an explanation
Death is also a natural part of life
Suffering and loss are bad – they just hurt
There is no redemptive purpose – they are just bad.
My theology is that God is with us in our suffering
And in our good times, too
Celebrating our joys, and sharing our sorrow
Just the way that we do for each other.

Everything is Faith Formation
So we talk about what faith you have that will get you through this experience.
We might also ask, how is this experience challenging you to develop your faith
Spend some time in your spiritual practice.
Notice what is forming in you?
Be open to new insights
New learnings
Let this be the experience that you look back on later as the time you learned a new truth.
See you tomorrow. 1pm
