Next week
I’ll attend the Board meeting
I’ll attend the Pastoral Care meeting
I’ll lead the weekly staff meeting
I have a sermon to write for June 21
And I’ll working on preparing communication for Lissa.

June 21, is my last day preaching to you

Then for the last week of the month
I will participate in GA and Ministry Days activities
I will finish cleaning out my office

So I’m definitely in the space of
checking off the list of
The last time I’ll do that.
My last worship team meeting
Yesterday morning I had my last meeting with the 70+ group
Last evening I had my last meeting with the Personnel Committee
And I was really gratified that at all three of those meetings
The three groups surprised me
By taking some deliberate time
To reflect on the interim ministry time we had been through
And to share stories

Some of the stories were personal stories about me and my work
And I appreciate that

But we also just told stories about the work we shared together
The life of the church over the last two and a half years
What we did
What we’ve been through
Successes
Learnings
Tough times that we laugh about now

Here’s two things that I like about what happened in those meetings
And that I think are good rules for making a good, goodbye
In all the times and ways we need to say goodbye.

First we said “goodbye”
We didn’t say “see ya”
We acknowledged that this is a real ending
We didn’t pretend that this month’s committee meeting is like all the others
We didn’t ignore the ending
We attended to the emotional and spiritual work of leave-taking
Even though that can sometimes be painful, or uncomfortable

Unless you really make an ending with an old way of being
You cannot begin a new way of being

And second, we were specific
We said specifically what we valued about each other
Not a general, “it’s been great!”
But I like this
I admire that
I remember this
I learned this
I’m going to take this
Specific thing
With me.

While we have still a few more weeks to finish this interim
I encourage you to not miss this opportunity
To say goodbye
You don’t have to do that with me
Necessarily
But say goodbye to the interim
Say goodbye to this time
In the history of this church

See you Tuesday, 1pm.
