Saying Goodbye

Thinking about Jack’s Memorial Service

A lot of folks say,
I don’t want a service
I don’t want a fuss made over me

I’m a little like that
But a memorial is not for the person who died
A memorial is an acknowledgment of how our lives are interconnected
The parting of one person, causes ripples throughout the community
And the community needs to  re-order itself around the absence

So when the Board started talking about having a farewell for me
My first reaction was, “I don’t want a fuss”
But I realized quickly that the congregation needs to make a fuss
Because we need to experience a good ending
And, that the memorial wasn’t about me
But about how the community is interconnected
And you all need to re-order yourself around the absence
My absence

So I asked the organizers to create a farewell
That was a celebration of the interim ministry
Honoring my part in what we did together
But also acknowledging what we all did together
Saying goodbye to the Interim minister
But also saying goodbye to the Interim ministry
So you can start the Settled Ministry
Properly

2)  Message

Thinking about the Budget Hearing
Acknowledging how strong we are
How prepared our church is
For a time like this

Similarly, I’m feeling
How prepared we are personally for this Pandemic
Not nationally
That’s really been a horrowshow of unpreparedness
And denial
But personally how prepared we are
We have done our spiritual work
We are strong
We are courageous
We are resilient
We are patient
We are kind
We are compassionate
We know how to do community

Just like our church budget
We prepared for a rainy day
And now that the rainy day is here
We have built up skills that we can draw on.

I’ll see you tomorrow 1pm
