2) Message
Holy Saturday/The great Sabbath
In the Christian holy week this is the day that Jesus lays in the tomb.
there are no religious services
With Jesus dead in the tomb there is nothing to celebrate.
According to the Apostles Creed, recited mostly in Catholic churches
This is the day Jesus, “descended into Hell”
With some of the traditions saying that he brought salvation to the righteous dead who had died before Jesus was born.
So it’s a great sabbath
A great resting.
In Hebrew, Saturday is Shabbat.
So every Saturday is a Sabbath
A day of rest.
We all need a rest right now.
Maybe a great rest
Ironically, although I’m not able to work at the church
I’m working harder than ever the last few weeks.
And even if you’re not working
We’re dealing with high stress
And learning new technology, like Zoom
And figuring out how to get groceries delivered
So I’m feeling exhausted all the time
And maybe so are you.
So let’s give ourselves a sabbath
A deliberate rest
Sabbath rules are:
no work – take a break
No screens – read a book instead
But I make an exception for checking in with friends
Take a nap
Sit in your backyard
Feel the whole world take a pause around you
It’s slow.
It’s still
It’s quiet
Breathe the clean air.
Enjoy the great sabbath
And I’ll see you tomorrow for our Easter service at 10am
