Is the season that begins on Sunday called autumn or fall? Either is correct. Autumn is derived from Latin. I prefer fall because it’s derived from an observation of the season, the time when leaves fall.
Earlier this week, I noticed the abundance of fallen leaves in our church yard. I wore a sweater one morning for the first time in months. I find it spiritually healthy to pay attention to the world, to see what’s really there, to name it accurately, and live in it fully. A change of season is a good time to check in. Am I really here, now? Or am I stuck in a nostalgic summer, or anxiously combatting a winter that hasn’t yet arrived?
