Olympic Gold

I’ve been watching the Olympic Games
Probably you have, too
At the end of each event
The announcer finds the winner
And asks them to explain.

And every athlete answers:
I had a plan
I followed the path
I did what I knew
I did it again

Success is a story I wrote long ago
I imagined, and saw, and practiced,
Practiced, practiced, yes
It looks like invention
But it isn’t.

It’s intention
At the edge of the board, or track, or mat
A story I tell to myself
Here I twist, there I bend
Always I keep my head up

And then my body tells the story again
Here, I twist, there I bend
Always I keep my head up
An old story now, faithfully told
From beginning to gold.
