The Arc of the Moral Universe

Many years ago a Unitarian minister wrote:  “I do not pretend to understand the moral universe. The arc is a long one. My eye reaches but little ways. I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by experience of sight. I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends toward justice.”

I do not pretend to understand the moral universe.

May humility protect us from assuming that our sense of justice is perfect or absolute

The arc is a long one.

May we wed passion to patience.

My eye reaches but little ways.

My we acknowledge our limits and not be embarrassed to admit our failings or ask for help.

I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by experience of sight.

May we know that humankind and human abilities are not the measure of the world.

I can divine it by conscience.

May we listen to that still, small voice of divinity that speaks in each of us.

And from what I see I am sure it bends toward justice.

May our faith lead us to hope and our hope lead us to faith.
