If You Build it…

I am super pleased with the new space we have available for us now.  Our landlord, the First Congregational Church calls the room, “the nursery” but it’s more than that.  It’s a very large room divided in two with a small bathroom in between.  One side of the room we’ve set up as our child care area.  The other side we’ve arranged as a meeting room (pictured above) with a separate area with a couch and chair and coffee table for casual conversations, and a small computer desk with a printer.

I want to thank Elaine LeCain for arranging for us to have this space.  It’s ours to use when and however we like, 24/7.  It’s much larger and nicer than our previous “Room  6” at the church.  And thank you to everyone who helped pack boxes, move boxes, secure bookcases to the walls, and unpack boxes earlier this week.  That was Elaine LeCain, Mark Hodson, Leslie Reyes, and myself.

The line from the movie Field of Dreams is true:  “If you build it, they will come.”  Churches sometimes make a mistake of waiting until there’s a need and then scrambling to accommodate the need.  But it usually works in reverse.  If we work to create attractive spaces then programs will emerge to fill the space.

Perhaps you’re already eyeing the picture above and thinking of what we could do there:  An adult religious education group reading through some of those books on the shelves?  A creative writing group?  A letter-writing campaign on a local justice issue?  A weekly brown bag lunch group?  I can’t wait to see what emerges in the marvelous new spaces we’ve created this week.
