James Joyce’s Ulysses: Critical Essays, edited by Clive Hart and David Hayman
I picked up this book somewhat randomly at the used bookstore to help me with reading Ulysses. It was published by the University of California Press in 1974. The best feature of the book is that the 18 essays are by 18 different authors, one for each chapter of the book. So Joyce’s kaleidoscope of literary styles is matched by a collection of authors with different perspectives and ideas. My strategy was to read one chapter of Ulysses and then read the corresponding essay here. I found it to be very helpful.
